Kate Bolaffi
Time spent at YEAH: July 2005– June 2006
Bachelor of Health Science (Public Health)
La Trobe University
"In 2005 I had the privilege of working at YEAH during my last year as a Bachelor of Health Science (Public Health) at La Trobe University. During my time at YEAH I was involved in 2 main projects, 'A Closer Walk' DVD and Study Guide and the World AIDS Day Gala Event. Both projects exposed me to working within a grass roots organisation and applying my skills learnt at university. A benefit of working for a small organisation was the variety of work, as I was involved in all aspects of both events, from small tasks to more significant tasks. My placement included volunteer coordination, project management, logistical coordination, fundraising and liaising with key stakeholders.
Working along side the C.E.O gave me an insight into how to run a small not-for-profit and the challenges associated with it, including attending funding meetings and board meetings. My time at YEAH has assisted me successfully finding full time employment in the Health Promotion sector and the knowledge I learnt has remained with me. I would recommend doing a placement at YEAH to all health promotion/public health students who are looking for a challenging experience to make a difference in our community."

Time spent at YEAH: April 2006 – April 2007
Bachelor of Health Science/ Commerce (Public Health/Accounting)
La Trobe University

"At university I studied Health Science/Commerce at Latrobe University majoring in Public Health and Accounting. I began working at YEAH through a university placement subject Participatory Field Study. I was required to complete 80 hours of field work, however I decided to continue my work at YEAH once I had completed my hours."
Projects I was involved in:
- Launch of a Closer Walk Educational Resource: Assisted in compiling resource and disturbing to educational settings.
- Helped with organising public events to deliver message: National Youth Week - Listen up at Federation Square, YEAH’s first Birthday, assisted in Workshops delivered in schools, Launch of A Closer Walk Photographic Exhibition.
- AIDS for Shades: Brainstorming of innovative ideas to implement an AIDS for Shades Day into schools to increase awareness.
- Administrative work: receiving phone calls, replying to emails, updating the YEAH website, taking the minutes for board meetings and running errands.
"My time at YEAH gave me valuable experience that helped further my career in public health once I completed my studies. Through volunteering at YEAH I gained the knowledge of the importance of prevention and I now know this is the line of work I want to pursue into my future."
